Making daddy proud: presentations of femininity in video games with female protagonists
Despite the male dominated landscape of the video game industry, several games featuring female protagonists have garnered wide-spread recognition and acclaim among players of all genders. Existing video game literature suggests that women are underrepresented and hypersexualized across the medium. However, research on this topic faces the challenge of fast- paced, changing trends in the video game industry. Utilizing qualitative content analysis, this research analyzes the construction of femininity in video games with female protagonists from the most recent gaming console generation. By analyzing game narrative and character development, this study offers a critical look at how gender norms are reproduced through video games. Coding analysis revealed the centering of male protectors, lack of sexual agency, character development through suffering, and gendered expectations of morality. Overall, while many of the findings in this study mark a departure from the hypersexualized female characters from previous studies, the male gaze still manifests in these games through the paternal need to protect female characters. Game development with circuitpython
Making games on small devices is great fun and also a great way to learn. You don’t have to worry about breaking anything, and the games tend to be much simpler than on the big computers. And with CircuitPython you don’t need to install anything on your computer, all you need is a text editor. But it’s not easy to decide what you need exactly: what hardware to get, which libraries to use and how to actually put it all together to spend the minimum time on all that, and maximum time on the game itself? This course equips students and upskills professionals with the skill set in analyzing, diagnosing, and quantifying the energy use in buildings and its impacts. Design thinking for computer-aided co-design in architecture and urban design
This chapter proposes a framework for designers to interact with non-design experts through an enhanced communicative media. Double exposure fashion design portfolio
The output is a garment, designed and made by Claire Ferguson. A Requiem for Edward Snowden is a 50-minute audio-visual work by Matthew Collings and Jules Rawlinson which addresses surveillance, data privacy, loss of faith, moral choice, and personal sacrifice in an environment where we are totally reliant on electronic communication and daily routines; and in which our privacy is routinely compromised. The work is performed by a chamber trio comprising violin, cello and clarinet, with live electronics and live visuals. The work is multi-layered and textured, both sonically and visually, and includes computer generated, fixed-media and live captured imagery, manipulated in real-time. This output makes an original contribution to performance practice knowledge about audiovisual ‘comprovisation’ (fixed composition with open or improvised elements) using audio-visual narratives of surveillance and sousveillance. Mechanisms of soil organic carbon sequestration and implications for management
Organic carbon sequestration is delineated from the different mechanisms underlying the storage of organic matter in mineral soils. The scene is set with definitions of the major terms within the complex of organic matter formation in soils, followed by describing the types of organic matter entering the soil and the major processes during turnover and the protective mechanisms leading to organic matter storage in soils. Detritusphere and rhizosphere are identified as soil compartments with high and specific organic matter input. From the process complex of OM degradation and binding, the potential of different soils for sequestering organic carbon is delineated and its limitations discussed with regard to the possibility of C saturation of mineral soils. In the light of these considerations, soil management options are deduced either by increasing organic carbon inputs to the soil by improved land use/management practices or by decreasing organic carbon outputs. The impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on human rights
Europe is characterised by developed liberal democracies that put a strong emphasis on the protection of human rights. Since the 1950’s, no major political or economic event has put in question the commitment of the European Union or the Member States to upholding the rule of law and to protecting fundamental human rights. The COVID-19 pandemic presented the first major challenge to these commitments. Despite the existing network of rules protecting human rights, it is undisputed that this network has been undermined by the governmental actions taken in response to the pandemic. This publication is the result of a coordinated research effort by Frederick University academic staff to identify the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on human rights through doctrinal, comparative, multidisciplinary and empirical research. In particular, the book addresses the following issues: the pandemic as a major challenge for women’s working life in the EU; digital transformation in the COVID-19 era; privacy vs public health in the case of COVID-19 tracing apps; effects of the pandemic crisis on general population mental health; employee rights during pandemic in social sciences; the impact of the pandemic on shipping; how criminal law helps to tackle the pandemic; corruption risks in public procurement in the context of COVID-19; and the continuous mutation of the raised issues among pandemic, law and the state.

Marketing professionals and business owners strive to evaluate the effectiveness of their marketing investments. With multiple marketing channels at their disposal, understanding how these channels interact and influence each other is crucial. Digital analytics tools, such as Google Analytics, tend to measure the isolated success of each marketing channel. However, the intertwined effects and interdependencies between channels are often undervalued. This study, therefore, ventures into this territory. It focuses on the association between website traffic from various digital marketing channels and the purchases made by users visiting websites through direct traffic sources. We analyzed 89,394 purchases from an e-commerce business in Europe. We conclude that three marketing channels can explain 61% of the variance. By shedding light on this overlooked aspect, we aim to guide advertisers toward a more holistic understanding of digital marketing channels. Published in the journal Marketing Letters.

Covid-19 lockdowns: a catalyst for rethinking assessments in skill-based nursing courses
Amid the Covid-19 mandated lockdowns, the Aga Khan University School of Nursing and Midwifery in Pakistan (SoNAM-PK) closed their physical campuses to adhere to public health requirements for social distancing. The students living on campus returned to their primary residences. Students, especially in remote areas of northern Pakistan, lacked dependable internet connections and travelled miles to reach a central hub where internet connections were made available for the students by the university through a partnership with Aga Khan Development Network schools. While male students could travel on their own, female students required a male escort or stayed home and missed the lessons – in alignment with cultural norms and restricted mobility (Cassum et al. 2024). A few students captured and shared videos to exhibit their struggles to access internet connections and technological devices to the faculty and the university at large through social media, including Facebook and WhatsApp. Faculty at the school quickly pivoted instruction from face-to-face to the online medium, often without sufficient preparation. Around 30% of the SoNAM-PK faculty had experienced teaching in a blended modality; however, assessing students online was new for everyone. Aligning with the book’s theme, only assessments of the practice-based courses are discussed.
